On role models
So often people talk about what terrible role models Rihanna and Nicki Minaj are, and what great role models Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift are. To which I have to say…really?
Taylor Swift writes most of her songs about men she’s dated. She is cunning and saavy, especially when it comes to manipulating the media, but she hides that in order to maintain her sweet, “all-American” image. Selena Gomez is most famous for her relationship with Justin Beiber.
Rihanna has long maintained that she does not want to be a role model. She is young and living her life, and she owns her mistakes. She is unapologetic about her success. Nicki Minaj, whether on Twitter or in interviews, constantly reminds girls to succeed in school. She has made it clear that she is first and foremost a businesswoman looking after her family. After being betrayed and raped by ex-boyfriends, she has remained single for the past ten years. She started writing rhymes and rapping as a means to cope with her life, and she was eventually discovered when she posted her music on MySpace. Her life story is one of resilience and perseverance despite the odds.
The problem isn’t that Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez are role models. The problem is that we don’t allow women to be complex. We don’t allow different women with different life stories to be considered role models because we fear that complexity. God forbid they define their lives in terms other than men.
watch the video!! Love that woman for speaking up
Saw this posted on my facebook this morning and just had to share. It continually amazes me how many people here on tumblr and elsewhere in the world continue to think the answer to racism is more racism…or that racism against white people is somehow “justified” or “doesn’t count as racism.”
Not only do white people think you’re full of shit, but so do your fellow POC.
Watch the video. It’s worth it. The man’s speech and the sincerity of the last woman’s kindness (to both women) are heartwarming.
Newsflash, Everyone: Tom Daley Isn’t Gay
He’s bisexual. And yes, it does make a big difference.
Tom explicitly says in the video that he still “fancies girls,” and he never uses the word “gay,” “homosexual,” or any other synonymous word to describe his sexuality.
The fact that media outlets immediately jump to the conclusion that he’s gay not only contributes to the issue of bisexual erasure, it also misrepresents what Tom Daley said, which was exactly what he wanted to avoid by making the YouTube video in the first place.
So get your facts straight everyone. Tom made an incredibly courageous decision in coming out and he deserves our support and respect.
Honestly I don’t talk about my problems with anyone because I don’t even know whats wrong with me sometimes.
Imagine reading a book of every conversation where people have spoken about you.
- me: i'll do it at 7PM
- time: 7:02PM
- me: oops too late gotta wait till 8 now
Graphing Calculator, we couldn’t use this technique during Highschool in test. The math teachers actually check your graphing “graphics” calculator to see if you haven’t gotten any note in there. You sometimes couldn’t even bring one in. You would have to use a different calculator.
Okay, my sophomore year I had a TERRIBLE Chem teacher, and myself and all of my friends were failing. So, I came up with the idea to write notes on a piece of paper which you cut into the size of the cover of your graphing calculator, and you then tape it onto the inside of the cover. When you open the calculator and slide the cover onto the back, no one can see your notes. You inch the cover up if you need to check notes. This is how all of my friends passed Chem, and I still do it today, in fact, I passed my College Algebra final today with this. I have never once had a teacher have an inkling of suspicion when doing this. Try it, it works!!
Write on a small piece of paper and put it under your thighs….write on the inside of your calculator …write on your desk and cover it with your arm . works everyyy time
how do I reach these kids
I’ve done all of those things. Works like a charm.
Use an eraser to write answers on the desk. Only at certain angles can people read them. It works for me in Biology.
I just wear a skirt and write things on the top of my thighs and discreetly check by crossing my legs. Even if a teacher catches a glimpse they can’t ask you to pull up your skirt
